UniSuper currently invests over $70 billion on behalf of over 400,000 members and, through its commercial dealings, has a high demand for specialist legal representation to negotiate and draft a wide variety of contracts.
We are searching for a talented and versatile disputes lawyer to join our Legal Negotiations team and use their exceptional advocacy skills to help protect UniSuper’s position in disputes and complaints plus act as a balanced and independent legal adviser to the Insurance & Claims team and the Trustee. This role has a focus on disputes within the superannuation industry, so experience with financial services and/or the legal issues arising from applications for insured benefits is preferred. The successful applicant will probably have over 3 years’ experience in these fields.
You will be exposed to interesting and diverse work including taking the strategic lead in resolving a wide range of disputes. You will work directly and closely with our business stakeholders to ensure that UniSuper’s legal position is well protected, get the best commercial outcome possible and will work in an environment which values technical excellence and innovative, commercial solutions. You will be responsible for preparing and executing dispute resolution strategies, liaising with external dispute resolution bodies, appearing in conciliation conferences and drafting legal submissions. You will also be responsible for acting as a commercial, balanced and independent legal adviser to Board committees and the Insurance & Claims team in relation to a wide range of insurance-related matters
You will work within the Legal Negotiations team, part of the broader Legal & Governance team of 18 professionals, and also have the opportunity to be embedded within the business.
Ideally you’ll bring your own mix of skills and experience to the team, but some of that will include:
At least 3 years' experience as a lawyer, perhaps within a law firm or a financial services firm
Experience advising on the legal issues arising from insured benefit applications will be highly valued
Being highly articulate and influential in face to face negotiations
A highly commercial,pragmatic mindset; and
Strong, interpersonal and communication skills.
