About The Role

  • Provide legal advice in relation to all aspects of VIT's regulatory functions, including undertaking legal risk assessments and suitability assessments in connection with teacher registrations.
  • Undertake work in relation to disciplinary hearings and court proceedings (appeals/prosecutions), including drafting allegations, conferencing with witnesses, and undertaking appearance work in less complex matters.
  • Manage VIT's interim suspension and suspension of registration process, including ensuring that reviews are conducted in a timely and comprehensive manner and regulatory action is taken promptly.
  • Exercise sound professional judgement about the application of legislation and the development of policy options.
  • Prepare authoritative and high quality reports, briefs and correspondence on complex issues.
  • Demonstrate accountability in respect of managing risk associated with disciplinary and other matters.
  • Communicate clearly, effectively and sensitively with stakeholders and negotiate with stakeholders utilising persuasion.
  • Provide specialist support to the Manager Legal (Principal Lawyer) to enable the provision of high quality legal advice across VIT. 

About You

As an experienced lawyer, you will have sound and practical knowledge of current risk-based regulatory practices and disciplinary proceedings. You will be admitted as an Australian Legal Practitioner with a current Victorian Practising Certificate (or the ability to acquire one), preferably have experience in working as a government lawyer and ideally a passion for child safety and experience working with the education sector.

  • You will be a resilient and flexible practitioner with a highly organised approach and a proven track record in providing pragmatic and sound legal advice to decision makers In addition to this, as the successful candidate, you will have
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills underpinned by sound analytical capability.
  • Proven organisational awareness and an ability to translate this into effective risk management practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills and the ability to influence others in an agreed direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Strong attention to detail and be self-motivating. 
  • Please note that the role will require the incumbent to undertake work in relation to sensitive matters, which may involve allegations of child sexual abuse.
