Introduction

Australian Clinical Labs is one of the largest pathology providers in Australia. It is currently looking for two hard-working and driven students (legal interns) to assist the General Counsel located at its national Head Office in Clayton.​

What opportunities and type of support will be available to the students

While the opportunities this work experience placement might provide will vary depending on the supervisor’s workload at the time placement is undertaken, some examples of the type of activities students are likely to experience or have exposure to, both hands-on and by observation, include the following.​

  • Meeting, communicating and interacting with internal and or external stakeholders;
  • File management, recording, retrieving and maintaining accurate client and matter information on in-house legal file management spreadsheet;
  • Interacting with external legal service providers such as solicitors in other organisations;
  • Legal research and legal factual analysis;
  • Considering ethical and professional responsibility issues;
  • Drafting and reviewing correspondence and legal documents;
  • Uploading, searching and retrieving documents from Legal Document Management Software;
  • Exposure to internal management processes;
  • Brief overview of linked financial and accounting systems; and
  • Administrative activities which support the delivery of legal services.
     

Please note that it is not necessary that the placement will address all of the above listed activities, however the supervisor will make reasonable endeavours to address the majority, during the period of placement committed by the successful students.

 

To help develop the students’ skills, the supervisor will make reasonable endeavours to:

  • provide opportunities to observe and review the exercise of professional skills by an experienced practitioner;
  • give feedback and guidance on work;
  • provide any necessary support; and
  • give opportunities to discuss problems.
     

The supervisor will:

  • give work and tasks that are well defined;
  • give clear instructions and check that they have been understood;
  • provide sufficient factual background;
  • provide a realistic framework for completion of work tasks;
  • answer questions which arise;
  • assign tasks and work with an increasing degree of difficulty;
  • ensure there is enough but not too much work;
  • provide work which requires the use of a range of different skills;
  • create an environment where students feel comfortable about asking questions;
  • provide regular guidance and feedback on performance;
  • ensure that achievements and improvements are recognised and praised;
  • ensure that aspects of performance which require improvement are thoroughly discussed; and
  • encourage self-development.
