About the Business Unit 
The primary function of Strategic Policy is the development and coordination of the implementation of proposals for primary and subordinate legislation within the Justice portfolio. 
Strategic Policy provides policy advice to the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Director-General, other State Government departments and Commonwealth agencies about all areas for which the Attorney-

General and department are responsible. The unit also drafts ministerial and departmental correspondence regarding these matters. 
Strategic Policy often publishes discussion papers, exposure drafts of Bills and similar documents for the purposes of community consultation. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Develop and implement less complex legislative and policy projects, including the preparation of legislation products such as drafting instructions for bills or regulations, explanatory notes and other cabinet / parliamentary supporting documentation;
  • Research and analyse justice policy issues and provide policy advice on matters within the Attorney-General's portfolio responsibilities;
  • Prepare briefings, submissions, ministerial and departmental correspondence and/or other documents for the Attorney-General, senior departmental officers and departmental units within the Department of Justice and Attorney-General;
  • Liaise and consult with relevant statutory bodies, departments, professional bodies and community groups on justice policy matters and draft legislation; and
  • Prepare material for and participate in inter-departmental and inter-agency meetings and forums as required.

2. Achieves results - experience (for example policy or legal) that demonstrates an ability to formulate policy and develop and implement legislation, particularly in relation to justice matters; 
3. Supports productive working relationships - demonstrated ability to work in a team, build and maintain work relationships and manage client expectations; 
4. Displays personal drive and integrity - taking personal responsibility for the accurate completion of work, acting professionally at all times and demonstrating initiative and drive in completing tasks; and 
5. Communicates with influence - demonstrated sound oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. 

Mandatory Qualifications, Conditions and Requirements 

  • A degree in law from a recognised tertiary institution or admission as a barrister or solicitor is required to perform this role.
