About the role

The Legal function is responsible for providing strategic legal advice to enable BHP to achieve its commercial objectives and manage legal risk in compliance with applicable laws and consistent with the BHP Charter.

We now have an excellent opportunity for an experienced disputes lawyer to join BHP  Legal team as  Legal Counsel - Disputes. 

Reporting to the Head of Legal - WAIO and Nickel West, this is a unique and exciting opportunity to use your specialist skills and experience in legal disputes with a leading global resources company.  This role will provide specialist legal advice and support to BHP’s WA iron ore and nickel assets, with particular focus on the management of disputes, including litigation and arbitration. The role is based in Perth, with occasional travel required to site.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES 
Acting as a key adviser and providing independent legal advice in the area of disputes law to support effective and strategic decision making within the WA Iron Ore & Nickel West assets, particularly in relation to the management of disputes

Providing strategic advice on legal risks affecting BHP and advising on the management of those risks, particularly in relation to disputes or potential disputes, included regulatory investigations

Working collaboratively with the Legal and other functions to ensure BHP is appropriately managing legal and other external risks.

About You

A true strategic adviser you will bring experience in the management of complex litigation, arbitration and other forms of dispute resolution, along with strong commercial acumen, sound strategic judgement and the ability to achieve successful outcomes when working with multiple stakeholders.

You will be an excellent communicator (both oral and written) with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, and be able to resolve complex problems. With strong interpersonal skills you will be a team player who works effectively with others at all levels and in all disciplines in a team environment. 

To be considered for this role a Law degree and the ability to practice in Australia is essential.  A minimum of 5 years post admission experience with expertise in dispute management is desirable.
