About the Role

Joining a government entity experiencing rapid and progressive change, you will be drawn upon to provide guidance and advice on complex and varied legal matters. The portfolio of projects that the Council is actively implementing include Australia’s next international airport, new subsea cable infrastructure and multiple environmental initiatives. Exercising considerable professional judgement you will;


  • Provide specialist professional legal advice to Council and its committees, Managers and staff
  • Conduct negotiations with external parties
  • Preparation of complex legal documentation, contracts and agreements, including a variety of Leases and Licences
  • Supervising staff responsible for a range of conveyancing services
  • Recommend changes to Council policy where relevant
  • Support the General Counsel in ensuring best practice and achievement of Legal Services business objectives
  • Supervision and development of Legal Support and Administration staff

About you

An expert in the application of law in a political or local government entity, you will be familiar with local laws, general litigation, intellectual law, insurance claims, leases, licences, conveyancing, town planning and development. Your depth of experience in a legal practice or in-house appointment, will ensure a strong grounding in principles of law, practices and procedures of all Courts and Tribunals including Court of Appeal, and of the law relating to local government practice. A current holder of a Legal Practising Certificate pursuant to the Queensland Law Society Act, you will also possess current admission as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland. Your post admission experience will also lend itself to enrolment or eligibility for enrolment, to practice in the Federal & High Courts of Australia. Your leadership of small teams and stakeholder management abilities will also be highly valued.
