Fixed Term role ( up to 3 years ) – located in the modern CBD offices
Transport for NSW is delivering a once-in-a-century investment in new infrastructure and services, including Sydney Metro. The first line of this new fully automated railway opened earlier this year. By 2024 Sydney Metro will have delivered 31 metro stations and more than 66km of metro rail. Planning is also underway for future lines which will shape the way Australia’s largest city travels, making Sydney Metro the biggest public transport project in the nation’s history.
We have an opportunity for a Legal Counsel to join Sydney Metro’s high performing Legal team. Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, you will provide general regulatory and commercial legal services to contribute to the work of the Regulatory, Employment and Commercial law team.
The role also provides expert advice in the reas of GIPA, PIPPA, procurement, IT, trademarks, delegations and commercial agreements. You will work in a supportive in-house team environment dealing closely with all areas and levels of the organisation.
The role is also required to provide legal advice on projects that are highly complex, highly sensitive, have a high profile and have high financial, reputational or operational risks as well as on more day to day routine matters such as high volume construction and projects work.

You are a proven professional looking for a career-defining opportunity to build a legacy for generations to come.
You will have demonstrated experience in providing expert legal advice in complex or contentious matters.
Sound understanding of commercial law and statutory interpretation principles, with proven ability to apply those principles in the context of complex decision making in a regulatory framework.
Eligible to hold an unrestricted practicing certificate in NSW
Superior current knowledge and expertise in construction law and at least 1 of the following other areas of law:
General commercial law
Legislation administered by the Agency
Exceptional record in building collaborative relationships across a wide variety of stakeholders & service providers.
Willingness to be involved in a variety of matters and capability to obtain highly developed skills in other practice areas and an enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced environment are essential.
Strong communication skills, commercial acumen and a common-sense approach are required for success in this role.
This is an excellent stepping stone into an in-house career.
