Contribute to something big and learn new skills;
Use your legal expertise to defend the environment throughout the Australia Pacific Region;
Gain practical work experience, PLT hours and training; and
Volunteer for a leading independent campaigning organisation that uses peaceful protest and creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future.
About the role
Greenpeace Australia Pacific (GPAP) currently has a PLT opportunity for 2 legal students to volunteer with our Greenpeace Australia Pacific Legal and Governance Officer, based in our Sydney Ultimo office, commencing in November. Please note there is a minimum commitment of 5-8 hours per week for 3 months (with option to continue). We are ideally looking for someone who can volunteer 1 to 2 days per week.
As a PLT student within GPAP, you will receive training and supervision and will gain experience undertaking contract review, provision of small advices on employment and IP law, governance work, policy review and advocacy in the form of submissions on behalf of GPAP to parliament. The roles will be suited to law students in their 4th or 5th year of their undergraduate degree (or 2nd or 3rd year of their JD), although this is not a requirement.
Above all we’re looking for enthusiastic individuals with strong research skills who are excited by the prospect of defending the environment.
Australia and the Pacific are unique and precious environments. We’ve got a beautiful climate, rich oceans, vast forests and healthy food. Yet all of this is under threat. Greenpeace takes action to protect our natural home, now and for the future. We investigate and expose environmental abuse, hold decision-makers accountable, promote effective solutions and inspire others to create positive change.
What We Can Offer You!
As a Legal Volunteer you will learn new skills, strengthen your legal research capabilities and get an opportunity to create meaningful change within a safe, inclusive and collaborative working environment.

“My time at GPAP was unlike anything else I’d ever done. I was exposed to so many different areas of law, whilst simultaneously being able to see the inner structure of one of the world’s foremost environmental NGOs. I found myself challenged everyday, but was always offered careful guidance. The atmosphere that was generated made it hard to believe that I was actually working. Going into the initial interview, I knew that this was the opportunity of a lifetime. My opinion hasn’t changed.”

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to complete my placement hours at Greenpeace Pacific Australia. Working alongside a team of passionate individuals committed to the exposure of global environmental problems and promoting solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future, was a truly humbling experience. I was able to further develop my legal skills under the guidance of the incredible Katrina Bullock who was always approachable and encouraged questions. The variety of legal issues allowed me to explore a number of areas of law including: contract, employment, governance, privacy, electoral and information security law. Any legal student would benefit greatly from the opportunity to work with this fantastic organisation – I know I have.”
